# How do you graph y=1/5x by plotting points?

Jun 26, 2016

#### Explanation:

Let us select some values of $x$ in multiples of $5$, such as $\left\{- 20 , 0 , 20\right\}$

Corresponding values of $y$ are one-fifth of that i.e. $\left\{- 4 , 0 , 4\right\}$

So the three points on graph would be $\left(- 20 , - 4\right)$, $\left(0 , 0\right)$ and $\left(20 , 4\right)$.

As $y = \frac{1}{5} x$ is a linear equation, hence straight line joining these points will give us the desired graph, which is like this

graph{x/5 [-20, 20, -10, 10]}
