$p H$ $=$ $- {\log}_{10} \left[{H}_{3} {O}^{+}\right]$. Given the negative logarithmic scale, simple addition of $H C l \left(a q\right)$ will lower $p H$ substantially.
Given the negative logarithmic scale, increasing ${H}_{3} {O}^{+}$ concentration will substantially reduce $p H$.
The acid that we buy commercially, approx. $\text{35% w/w}$, is about $10 \cdot m o l \cdot {L}^{-} 1$ with respect to $H C l$.
I hope I don't insult your intelligence when I remind you that $\text{muriatic acid "=" hydrochloric acid}$.
