Apr 7, 2015

When we see an expression like this, we follow the correct order of operations:

Parentheses>Exponents>Multiplication and Division>Addition and Subtraction (PEMDAS)

color(blue)(11-4*(-7)

$= 11 - \left(- 28\right)$ (We performed the Multiplication first)

$= 11 + 28$ (And then the Subtraction of $- 28$ from $11$)

color(blue) (= 39

Multiplication is done before addition or subtraction so
do the multiplication first
$4 \cdot \left(- 7\right) = \left(- 28\right)$
and therefore
$11 - 4 \cdot \left(- 7\right)$
$= 11 - \left(- 28\right)$
$= 11 + 28$
$= 39$
