If the question asked:

$\frac{5^{2} - 8}{2}$ $(5^2-8)/2$ then the answer is: $\frac{17}{2} = 8.5$ $17/2=8.5$

1.) If the question were to ask us to find $5^{2} - \frac{8}{2}$ $5^2-8/2$ , then

$5^{2} = 25$ $5^2 = 25$ and $\frac{8}{2} = 4$ $8/2 = 4$

So,

$5^{2} - \frac{8}{2} = 25 - 4 = 21$ $5^2-8/2=25-4=21$
