Multiply both sides by #3# to isolate #d#

#-84 * 3 = d/cancel(3) * cancel(3) -> -252 = d#

The objective is to have #d=#something. So we need to get the #d# on its own

Note that #d/3# is the same as #1/3xxd#

So if we can change the #1/3# into 1 then we have #1xxd# which is the same as just d.

What we do to one side of the equation we also do to the other.

Multiply both sides by #color(red)(3)#

#color(green)((-84)color(red)(xx3)=d/3color(red)(xx3))#

#-252=d xx 3/3#

but #3/3=1#
