Start of by factoring;

${x}^{2} - 2 x - 24$

Product =-24

Sum =- 2

Factors = -6 , 4

$\implies {x}^{2} - 6 x + 4 x + 24$

$= x \left(x - 6\right) - 4 \left(x - 6\right)$

$\therefore {x}^{2} - 2 x - 24 = \left(x - 6\right) \left(x - 4\right)$

So $\left(x - 6\right) \left(x - 4\right) = 0$

So $x = 6 , 4$
