Since I don't like working with decimal fractions unnecessarily and since it would be nice to have a positive coefficient for #x# on the left side,
Multiply everything by #(-10)#.
#color(white)("XXXX")##17x +17 = -8#
Subtract #(17)# from both sides to isolate the #x# term coefficienct.
#color(white)("XXXX")##17x = -25#
Divide both sides by #(17)#.
#color(white)("XXXX")##x = -25/17#
