Explanation:

I would isolate #x# from the first equation:
#x=-y-6#
and substitute for #x# into the second:
#6(-y-6)-y=5#
solve for #y#:
#-6y-36-y=5#
#-7y=41#
so that #y=-41/7#
using this back into the first equation:
#x=41/7-6#
#x=(41-42)/6=-1/7#
