You can isolate one variable in one equation and, then, substitute its value in the other equation:

Let's isolate $x$ in the first equation, for example.

$x = 2 - 5 y$

Now, substituting it:

$\left(2 - 5 y\right) - 1 = 2 y$
$1 = 7 y$
$y = \frac{1}{7}$

Now, as we know $x = 2 - 5 y$ and $y = \frac{1}{7}$,

$x = 2 - 5 \left(\frac{1}{7}\right)$
$x = 2 - \frac{5}{7}$
$x = \frac{9}{7}$
