# How do you solve x-5=-1/3x-6?

May 31, 2015

Given $x - 5 = - \frac{1}{3} x - 6$
To solve:

• clear the fractional term
• re-arrange the terms

To clear the fractional term, multiply everything by 3
$\textcolor{w h i t e}{\text{XXXXX}}$$3 x - 15 = - 1 x - 30$

To re-arrange terms, add $1 x + 15$ to both sides
$\textcolor{w h i t e}{\text{XXXXX}}$$4 x = 45$

then divide both sides by 4
$\textcolor{w h i t e}{\text{XXXXX}}$x = 45/4 = 11¼
