You can write:
#(12a^2+60a-8)-(16a^2-32a+9)=# the minus changes all the signs inside the second bracket, so you get:

#12a^2+60a-8-16a^2+32a-9=#

Now you can add together (algebrically, i.e., respecting the signs) similar quantities (such as the ones with #a^2#, for example).
