$256$ can be expressed as an exponential as ${256}^{1}$, ${16}^{2}$, ${\left(- 16\right)}^{2}$, ${4}^{4}$, ${\left(- 4\right)}^{4}$, ${2}^{8}$ or ${\left(- 2\right)}^{8}$
I think the answer wanted was probably $256 = {2}^{8}$
$256 = 2 \times 2 \times 2 \times 2 \times 2 \times 2 \times 2 \times 2$
$= {2}^{8} = {4}^{4} = {16}^{2} = {256}^{1}$
