There are five different types of categories in medicines that are related with Organic Chemistry.

We know, hydrocarbons are like everywhere. Chemistry, especially Organic Chemistry has wide applications in medicines, they are classified as:

1] Analgesics: The drugs which relieve the pain by acting on the CNS and without the loss of consciousness. There are two types of these:

  • Narcotic Analgesics : Depression on CNS.

  • Non-Narcotic Analgesics : Anti-inflammatory and anti-pyretic.

2] Tranquilizers : These drugs are stress relievers. They usually given to a patient after a operation.

3] Antimicrobials : These are the most common type of drugs. These drugs are used to stop the growth of micro organisms in the body or applied on a non living thing for the same purpose. There are three types of these:

  • Antibiotics : These drugs are prepared for living organisms and the are used to kill a specific micro organism only.

  • Antiseptics: They are applied on living tissues on the body like wound to stop the growth of microorganisms.

  • Disinfectants: These are applied to no living things for kill micro organisms.

4] Antifertility Drugs : These drugs are used to prevent pregnancy.

5] For Acidity : There are two types in these drugs:

  • Antacids : This is a base for neutralizing the acid of stomach.

  • Antahistamines : These are drugs that stimulate the secration of acid in the stomach.
