Well, don't we put vinegar on fish and chip suppers to make it tasty?


Of course salt-water fish exist in a regime where the #pH=7.5-8.4#, i.e. in a slightly alkaline environment. Increased atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide, an acidic oxide, has likely decrease this value over the years....
