# How does salt affect the pH of water?

Aug 12, 2017

Common salt would not affect the $p H$ of water to any extent.....

#### Explanation:

$N a C l \left(s\right) \stackrel{{H}_{2} O}{\rightarrow} N {a}^{+} + C {l}^{-}$

Neither sodium ion nor chloride ion effects water hydrolysis.

There are of course other salts, for instance, sodium fluoride, that would lead to hydrolysis:

$N a F \left(a q\right) + {H}_{2} O \left(l\right) r i g h t \le f t h a r p \infty n s H F \left(a q\right) + H {O}^{-}$
