How does water potential affect osmosis?

1 Answer

The water potential gradient determines the direction of osmosis. It goes from high to low water potential.

This is because n a high water potential area there is a bigger number of free water molecules. Free here means they are not attached to other solute molecules forming a hydration shell.

This video discusses the changes which occur in plant cells when they are placed into hypertonic and hypotonic solutions.

Hope this helps!
