  1. Dehydration of two equivalents of acetic acid removes OH from one and H from the other and combining the two.
  2. trifluoro peroxoic acid inserts an oxygen in between the two carbonyls preferentially (least recommended)
  3. Acyl chloride as electrophile, carboxylic acid as nucleophile.
