How is meiosis 1 different from meiosis 2?

Meiosis 1 is for generalized somatic cell division whereas, Meiosis 2 is for for the production of gametes, in the gonads.

Explanation:

In meiosis 1, the general cellular chromosome number (diploid) 2n, is retained as each and every cells in the body need to have the same chromosome number throughout but the gamete needs to have a (haploid) chromosomal number n, so that after mating; n ( from the male gamete) can add up with the female gamete (which is also n) to form 2n, (the zygote) soon after the reproduction.
