If I am writing this sentence: "The term ethnocentrism is commonly defined as . . ." what punctuation marks would I use around ethnocentrism? Would it be 'ethnocentrism' or "ethnocentrism"?

I would use neither, but some other way to make the word stand out.
Explanation:
I don't know the context of this sentence, but single or double quotation marks make the word look as 'just made up', 'not to be taken seriously', or 'just (in)vented by someone'.
I think I'd itilatize or underline it, or use a different font, depending on how many other words I'd like to explain.
