Two Civil disobedience actions in Alcatraz and in Wounded Knee gave Native Americans a national reach in medias that they had never had before. In 1973 Wounded Knee ws occupied for three months, two years after the end of the two-year long occupation of Alcatraz.

The Nixon Administration was called by Vine Deloria one of the most indulgent towards native tribes and the Great Society in the late sixties had made possible the creation of many social programs on reservations.
