# Is it possible to prepare a buffer solution using nitric acid (HNO_3) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH)?

As far as I know, a buffer solution could not be prepared from $N a O H$ and $H N {O}_{3}$. Nitrate anion would have little effect on $p H$.
You have a strong base, and a moderate to strong acid, $H N {O}_{3}$. You can protonate $H N {O}_{3}$ to form water and $N {O}_{2}^{+}$ by the use of sulfuric acid:
$H N {O}_{3} + {H}_{2} S {O}_{4} \rightarrow N {O}_{2}^{+} + H S {O}_{4}^{-} + {H}_{2} O$
