rotting wood is a decomposition reaction. The chemicals in the wood ( mainly the hydrocarbon cellulose a polysaccharid ) break down into simpler molecules. Bacteria, and other decomposers "eat" the wood breaking the complex molecules into energy and simpler molecules. such as Carbon Dioxide, and water.
