Hydrolysis

Hydrolysis is the decomposition of a compound into simpler compounds with the use of water.

E.g. Hydrolysis of sucrose

#C_12H_22O_11 + H_2O -> 2C_6H_12O_11#

note that this is not two glucose molecules, but rather a glucose and a fructose molecule (as fructose is an isomer of glucose, and shares the same molecular formula).
