# Is x/8 + x/9 = 6 a polynomial?

Aug 30, 2015

It is an equation, not a polynomial.

#### Explanation:

A Polynomial is a mathematical expression with one or more terms. But there are a few conditions:

• a variable in the numerator cannot have a negative exponent
• a variable cannot be inside a radical
• no variables or expressions in the denominator

For eg. $2 {x}^{2} + 4 x + 1$ is a polynomial

$4 {x}^{2}$ is a poplynomial

$3 \sqrt{x}$ is NOT a polynomial as x is inside a radical

But $\frac{x}{8} + \frac{x}{9} = 6$ is an equation as it is has an equal sign.

Hence its not a polynomial.
