List and describe the characteristics of living things?
- grow or metabolize
- move or locomotion
- are made of cells
- respond to stimuli
There are seven main features that all living things share, if not on the level on the whole organism, at least on the level of the cells or parts of this organism. They are movement, nutrition, respiration, sensitivity, reproduction, excretion, and growth.
Movement is changing the position the organism or part of it is occupying, e.g plants do not move but their roots do when growing.
Nutrition is the intake of compounds from the surrounding by the organism.
Respiration is the breaking down of chemicals to release the energy so it can be used by the organism.
Sensitivity is the detection of the change in the environment.
Reproduction is the production of a new individual of the organism.
Excretion is getting rid of waste material which has been metabolically changed inside the organism's body.
Growth is the increase in size and/or complexity of the organism.
Living things are characteristically distinguished as physical entities having biological processes.
They show certain physiological characteristics that are essential in the process of maintaining life.
Characteristics of living things:
All metabolic processes take place in very specific chemical and physical environments. Homeostasis is the regulation of the internal environment.
Most multicellular organisms show a defined hierarchy level of organisation. Cells make up tissues, tissues group to form organs. An organism is made up of several organ systems
Metabolism is a set of several life sustaining chemical processes. It is the transformation of chemical energy stored in molecules to energy usable for cellular processes ( anabolism and catabolism) .
Living things have the capability to adjust themselves to their surroundings. These adaptations include changes in structure or behaviour of an organism
Response to stimulus
This is the ability of living organisms to sense and respond to conditions or changes in the external environment.
It is the ability to produces offsprings . It is essential for the survival and continuity of species.
