# Rick has 1/2 of a footlong sub left from yesterday. He ate 1/3 of the leftover sandwich as a snack. What fraction of the entire sandwich did he eat as a snack?

He ate another $\frac{1}{6}$ of the entire footlong as a snack.

#### Explanation:

He ate one third of the half that he had.
That's the English sorted!

Now for the maths. IT is exactly the same.

$\frac{1}{3} \times \frac{1}{2} = \frac{1}{6}$

OR :

as soon as you see the denominators of 2 and 3 you should realise that you are working with sixths.

The original footlong was $\frac{6}{6}$.

Half was eaten, meaning that of the $\frac{6}{6}$, now $\frac{3}{6}$ are left.

One third is eaten, so three-sixths divided by 3 is $\frac{1}{6}$

$\frac{3}{6} \div 3 = \frac{3}{6} \times \frac{1}{3} = \frac{1}{6}$

Or: find $\frac{1}{3} o f \frac{3}{6}$

$\frac{1}{\cancel{3}} \times \frac{\cancel{3}}{6} = \frac{1}{6}$
