The Korean War (1950-1953) began when North Korea invaded South Korea. Why did the US and the UN get involved?

The U.S. was involved in the creation of South Korea and the Sygmund Rhee Government after World War 2. When The North Invaded they went to the United Nation to get support.

Explanation:

Russia was boycotting the United Nations at the time over the recognition of the Chiang kai-shek Government in Taiwan as the government of China. The Russians did not attend the meeting that passed the resolution to counter the North Korean threat. Otherwise they would have vetoed it.
