# The pH scale runs from a low of what?

Jun 7, 2017

The pH scale runs from a low of 0 to 14.

#### Explanation:

pH zero would be 100% Hydrodium ${H}_{3}^{+} O$ ions

The lowest number on the pH scale is the strongest acid.

$p H$ doesn't have a "low," however, the minimum value on the scale is 0.
Typically pH falls somewhere between 0 and 14, however pH can be less than 0 or greater than 14. Keep in mind that $p H = - \log \left[{H}^{+}\right]$. If, for example, you have 12M HCl solution, the $\left[{H}^{+}\right] = 12 M$, and $p H = - \log \left(12\right) = - 1.08$
Thus, there is no set minimum value of pH. Typically, however, 0≤pH≤14, so scientists created a scale, and on that scale the minimum value for pH is 0.
