Humans can be both detractors and benefactors of biodiversity.

Explanation:

Humans are most often cited as the cause of decreasing biodiversity through resource over-exploitation.
They can also be forces for improving biodiversity through conservation efforts, breeding programs and better resource usage.

Of course, a continuing problem is the continuing GROWTH of the human population. We may not be AT a limit yet (or, maybe we are?), but at SOME point it should be apparent that every species (including humans) cannot have unrestrained growth or life ad infinitum - something has to give way!
