# What are the basic units of mass in the metric system?

Are these not $\text{grams}$?
Depending on whether we use $\text{MKS}$, or $\text{cgs}$ systems, the units of mass are the $\text{kilogram}$ or $\text{gram}$ respectively...where $1 \cdot g \equiv {10}^{-} 3 \cdot k g$....of course the prefix $k \equiv {10}^{3}$. Chemists typically deal with gram quantities of stuff, so they might be more comfortable with this unit.
