# What are the characteristics of a metal?

$\text{Malleable, ductile, capable of forming positive ions.......}$
$\text{conductive of heat, and usually, electricity. }$
These characteristics are consequences of metallic bonding, $\text{positive ions in a sea of electrons}$. Because the metal nuclei can move with respect to each other, while their valence electrons have been delocalized to the overall lattice, metals have these properties, which makes them the premier materials for use as tools.
