Recombination and reduction of chrosomes.
Explanation:
During the pchytene sub-stage, the homologous chrosomes recombine by crossing over and produce new combination of genes. It leads to variations which is raw materials for natural selection.
The numbers of chrosomes are reduced to half during the telophase I. The reduced number of chromosomes maitain the number of chrosomes in a species after the union of gametes.
