# What are the oxidation states of nitrogen?

Oxidation states range from $N \left(- I I I\right)$ to $N \left(V +\right)$......
Nitrogen is $- I I I$ in ammonia, and $+ V$ in $N {O}_{3}^{-}$. We have $N \left(+ I I\right)$ in $N O$, and $N \left(+ I V\right)$ in $N {O}_{2}$. Nitride anion is $- I I I$, and nitrogen is $- I I$ in hydrazine, ${H}_{2} N - N {H}_{2}$. Of course the common oxidation state is $0$ in $\text{dinitrogen}$.
