Swelling and accumulation of fluid in joints cause stiffness that the patients with arthritis suffer from, specially in morning. Application of hot pack on the area increases blood circulation, relaxes muscles and the stiffness is gradually eased.

Explanation:

Movable joints are affected by arthritis, it starts in joints of fingers in case of rheumatoid arthritis.

Synovial membrane gets inflamed and more of fluid accumulates in synovial cavity. This causes swelling around joint and stiffness of movement.

Please note, swelling is generally absent in case of osteoarthritis, morning stiffness is less pronounced. In fact soreness becomes severe through the day as bones in joint rub against each other during movement.
