I think this is a very difficult question...I would, simplicistically, say that is mass.

Explanation:

I am not able to tell you why but mass interfere with the space-time fabric of the universe creating a kind of depression or funnel where objects get trapped and bound.
It is like if you take a bowling (mass 1) and place it on a matress (the space-time) creating a depression on it. If you now send another ball, mass 2 (a marble for example), rolling on the matress it will fall into the depression created by mass 1 and get trapped.
