Explanation:

There were two Battles of Saratoga fought 18 days apart in 1777. They were a turning point in the American Revolutionary War.

On September 19th, British General John Burgoyne won a small but costly victory over American forces led by Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold.

Although his troop strength had been weakened, Burgoyne again attacked the Americans at Bemis Heights on October 7th. However, this time there Briish were defeated and forced to retreat. Ten days later Burgoyne surrendered.

This victory by the Americans convinced the French government to formally recognize the colonist’s cause and enter the war as their ally.
