The gastrointestinal ( GI ) tract , is an organ system within humans and other animals which takes in food , digests it to extract and absorb energy and nutrients and expel the remaining waste .

Explanation:

The human GI tract consists of the esophagus, stomach and intestines and is divided into the upper and lower GI tracts. The GI tract includes all structures between the mouth and anus forming a continuous passageway that includes the main organ of digestion, namely the stomach , small intestines and large intestines.

The whole GI tract is about 9 meters long.
The GI tract releases hormones from enzymes to help regulate the digestive process.
