Liver failure is the inability of the liver to perform its normal synthetic and metabolic function as part of normal physiology.

Explanation:

Hepatic failure occurs when the liver loses the ability to regenerate or repair, so that decompensation occurs.

Liver failure may be acute or chronic.
Acute liver failure can also be genetic, or due to certain prescription medicines, herbal supplements, viral infection, toxins or certain autoimmune disease.
Chronic liver failure is usually a result of cirrhosis or alcohol related liver disease.
