Explanation:

0.5 is said as "five-tenths". This is because it is one place after the decimal (which is the tenths place).
It would then become five-tenths, written as: $\frac{5}{10}$ $5/10$
You would then simplify the faction: $\frac{5}{10} = \frac{1}{2}$ $5/10=1/2$
This is because five can go into itself once and goes into ten twice.
Another way of thinking about it is that five is exactly half of ten.
