A buffer solution is a mixture of a weak base and its conjugate acid in appreciable quantities. It acts to resist gross changes in #pH#.

The buffer equation is simply:

#pH=pK_a + log_10{[[A^-]]/[[HA]]}#

When #[HA]=[A^-]#, #pH=pK_a#. Why?
