Gold is probably the best example. The value and beauty of the metal was responsible for several historical gold rushes in Australia, in the Americas, and in Africa.
In the 1980's when metal detectors became available, a lot of punters searched the old goldfields and found whopping great nuggets of gold that had been neglected by the original prospectors in the 19th century. These days I think you would have to be very lucky to find a large nugget.
