# What is an equation that you can use to find the number of Calories in any number of grams of trail mix?

Jun 2, 2018

Well, it depends on the label...

Define

• the total number of calories, $\text{Cal}$, as ${q}_{C a l}$
• the number of calories per container as ${\overline{q}}_{C a l}$ in terms of $\text{Cal/container}$
• the number of servings as ${N}_{S e r v}$
• the serving size in terms of $\text{g/serving}$ as ${m}_{S e r v}$

Then by simple unit conversion,

$8 \cancel{\text{servings" xx "43 g"/cancel"1 serving" = "344 g/container}}$

And thus,

$\textcolor{b l u e}{{q}_{C a l}} = \text{190 Cal"/cancel"container" xx cancel"1 container"/"344 g}$

$=$ $\textcolor{b l u e}{\text{0.522 Cal/g}}$

In general,

$\overline{\underline{|}} \stackrel{\text{ ")(" "q_(Cal) = barq_(Cal)/(N_(Serv)m_(Serv))" }}{|}$
