What is matter versus mass?

Matter is in general a physical substance that takes up space and has mass. Its immediate and measurable physical properties are volume and mass.
The following are examples of matter:
- Food
- Water
- Computers
The following are examples of what is NOT matter:
- Light (has no mass)
- Thoughts
- Heat
