Mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS) or hippocampal sclerosis causes a form of temporal lobe epilepsy.

Before reading the explanation, it is important to note that the definition of sclerosis is "abnormal hardening of tissue." Think of this definition in terms of the brain.

The hippocampus is a vital organ of the limbic system, located in the brain's medial temporal lobe. This is responsible for some of our short-term, but mostly our long-term memory.

Scarring and loss of neurons in the deepest part of the temporal lobe causes MTS. Brain damage that scars tissue may cause MTS, such as traumatic injuries, stroke, brain tumor, etc. As neurons die, more scar tissue develops.
