The Strong Interaction binds protons together and more generally quarks. It is responsible for the existence of nuclei.

Explanation:

As you know, protons have a positive electric charge. They repel each other. And they would never come together as a nuclei if it wasn't for a force so much stronger (hence the name) than the electromagnetic force that it is able to overcome the electric repulsion.
The modern point of view is that the strong interaction leads to quark confinement, that is the strong interaction is not only strong, but it has the ability to prevent two quarks from ever separating. It is to explain this and other experimental results that strings were introduced in the end of the 1960's.
