Explanation:

To find the average of #−2.5#, #5.2#, #1.7# and #−0.8#, we have to first add them and then divide by number of numbers added.

Sum of numbers is #(−2.5)+5.2+1.7+(−0.8)=6.9-3.3=3.6#. Here we have first added numbers with positive signs and then subtracted sum of negative numbers from the sum of positive. As latter is more than former, sign of sum is positive.

As there are four numbers, average is #3.6/4=0.9#.
