What is the difference between imperatives and directives?

Imperative is used for orders.
Directive is a suggestion.



It is a verb form made from the infinitive by leaving out "to". For example:

  • Go,
  • Don't speak,
  • Shut the door

This form is used to give orders which are required to be obeyed.


It is a verb form using auxiliary word would or hadFor example:

  • You had better go to a doctor.

  • If I were you, I would not lie to him.
