In mitosis, the chromosome number isn't halved. In Meiosis, the chromosome number is halved.

Explanation:

Mitosis is called the equational division while meisois is called the reductional division. A human cell with a diploid chromosome number of 2n=46 will still be 2n=46 under mitosis. However, in meiosis it will be halved to n=23.

Also, mitosis will produce an exact copy of the mother cell while meiosis will produce a different copy of the mother cell. This is the reason for generating diversity.
