The ego is the self, and the super-ego is the unattainable ideal version of the self.
Explanation:
In a lot of cartoons, a character will be faced with a decision. On his right shoulder is a little angel telling him the right thing to do, and on his left shoulder is a little devil telling him to do the awful thing he really wants to do instead. The angel is the superego, the devil is the id, and the guy being persuaded is the ego.
