In a nutshell galaxies are receding from each other as evidenced by the red shift of spectral lines of distant galaxies.
Explanation:
To put it correctly the Universe is not expanding. The space between galaxies is increasing as evidenced by Hubble's theory, as the Universe though unbounded is finite.
